Here are some comments from Joel
Round 3 and 4 both included interesting sacrifices but which were not very sound.
In round 4 in particular I played a very dubious sacrifice (12...Nxd4), based on the idea of trapping the e5 knight after 13.cxd4 f6, where I'd planned 14.Rc1 Qd7! 15.Nc6 Bb7 trapping the knight a second time. It was only after that i realised Qd7 loses the queen!! My opponent didn't find the best way to hang onto the piece(there were many) and made a tactical mistake that let me back into the game. A few blunders from both sides and luckily i came out on top with my opponent missing a draw.
So an interesting game but maybe not the best according to the computer.
Game 2 and 5 were probably my favourite ones i played. g2 was a fairly clean win in the sicilian dragon. Game 5 I misplayed the opening, and was definitely worse, but absorbed the pressure quite nicely and a poorly timed pawn break by the opponent allowed lots of trades into a better endgame where I took control very quickly.

Armstrong Club Position
An interesting position submitted by John Clarke with analysis provided by John.
John had White against Joel Tofield-Brown.
White to play.
I played:-
26. Nxd5
Was this a brilliancy or a blunder?
Brilliancy thought I, seeing only:-
26............. exd5
27. Bxd7 Rxd7
28. Qe8+
winning the exchange.
Blunder, thought I, after the actual moves:-
26. ....... exd5
27. Bxd7 Re7!
When I resigned.
Somewhere in between, said Fritz (which actually recommended 26. Nxd5).
Instead of resigning, I could have played on.
28. Bxc6 Rxe2
29. Bxd5+ Kf8
30. Rxe2 Rd6
31. Red2 Qxb2
When material is theoretically level, although I suspect most players would prefer Black.

In the first instance, the player playing as White should contact their opponent as soon as possible to arrange a date for their match. The window for playing Round One matches will open next Tuesday (1st October) and this opening stage of the competition needs to be completed by Tuesday, 12th November.
Whenever possible, games should be played at the club on a Tuesday night with the preferred time limit of 75 minutes plus a 10-second increment. Results should be entered on the sheet on the club noticeboard and/or e-mailed to me as soon as possible. As I receive them, I will add the results to the ECF's LMS to be submitted for grading.
Because all the matches are rated, it's essential that everyone who takes part in the Club Championship is a paid-up member of the ECF. If necessary, please renew your membership before playing your Round One match.
Thank you Paul for arranging the club championship.
